Alan Sydney Patrick Rickman, born February 21, 1946, is a British actor who voiced The Caterpillar in Tim Burton's 2010 remake of Alice in Wonderland. Rickman's first major movie role was Hans Gruber in Die Hard (1988); from there he went on to play The Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Severus Snape in all of the Harry Potter films to date, and Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd. He died of cancer at the age of 69 on January 14 2016.
Early lifeRickman won a scholarship to Latymer Upper School in London which is also where he started to get involved in drama. After that, he attended the Chelsea College of Art and Design and the Royal College of Art. His education allowed him to work as a graphic designer, and after graduation he opened a graphic design studio with a some friends. Although the business was successful, he decided to pursue acting. He wrote a letter to the Royal Academy of Art and was awarded a place in the school. He attended the RADA from 1972-74. There he studied works of Shakespeare and also won several prizes.
