Helena Bonham Carter (born 26 May 1966) is an English actress who played the maniacal Red Queen in Tim Burton's 2010 film, Alice in Wonderland, and its sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016). She was Tim Burton's domestic partner from 2001 to 2014, and they have two children, Billy Raymond and Nell Burton, who also appears in Alice in Wonderland. Bonham Carter is also known for her roles as Lucy Honeychurch in the film A Room with a View, Marla Singer in the film Fight Club, Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter film series, Kate Croy in The Wings of the Dove, and Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, as well as the other collaborations with Tim Burton.
Bonham Carter has been nominated for the Academy Award twice for her performances in the films The Wings of the Dove and The King's Speech. She has also received six Golden Globe nominations, an International Emmy Award, a BAFTA Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
Early life[]
Bonham Carter was born in Golders Green, London to her mother, Elena, a psychotherapist and her father, Raymond Bonham Carter, a merchant banker. Bonham Carter also has two brothers, Edward and Thomas. She is also a distant cousin of actor Crispin Bonham-Carter and politician Jane Bonham Carter. Through marriage, she is also distantly related to the author Ian Fleming.
She went to South Hampstead High School, which is an independent girls' school in Hampstead, London. Later, she went to Westminster School, a co-educational independent school near the Palace of Westminster. She was, however, denied admission to King's College in Cambridge, because the officials were afraid that she would leave mid-term to pursue her acting career. Although Bonham Carter did pursue an acting career later, she has not received any formal training.
