Humpty Dumpty is a fictional character from the novel Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There by Lewis Carroll. He is based upon a traditonal English nursery rhyme of the same name.
Nursery Rhyme[]
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the king's horses,
And all the king's men,
Couldn't put Humpty together again.
Origin of the Phrase[]
Brewer's Dictionary explains Humpty Dumpty as being a corruption of "humped and dumpy" and defines it as another name for an egg.[1]
Description[]
Humpty Dumpty grows from an egg that Alice purchases from the Sheep's curiosity shop at the end of Chapter Five. He perches himself atop a nearby wall and begins instructing her (nonsensically, of course) in matters of grammar and semantics. After reciting a poem, which he explains "was written entirely for (Alice's) amusement," he promptly says, "Goodbye," and shakes her hand in parting. She add, "...till we meet again," but Dumpty explains that he cannot recognize faces and would not know her should he see her a second time. He then closes his eyes and grows silent. After waiting for him to speak again, Alice walks away and Humpty Dumpty falls off the wall and breaks. He is listed in Through the Looking-Glass' dramatis personae as the Red Queen's rook.[2]
Other appearances[]
- In the sequel of Seeing Redd, known as Arch Enemy, Humpty Dumpty is re-imagined as Mutty P. Dumphy, who is descibed as a diminutive hairy-cheeked man with a single eyebrow and a head which resembled the rounded point of a gwynook's egg.
- In Batman comics there is a villain known as Humpty Dumpty, also known by his alter ego Humphry Dumpler, is a hulking man with an egg-shaped head who has a knack for disassembling and reassembling machines.
- In the erotic anime "Miyuki-chan in Wonderland", a woman named Humpty Dumpty controls the chessboard while sitting inside an over-sized egg. She has elegant white hair along with a long dress and a scarf.
- He also appears in the anime adaption by Nippon Animation "Fushigi no Kuni no Alice".
- Humpty Dumpty also appears as half-broken and smoking a cigar in the video game "American McGee's Alice." He will occasionally pick at his injury, causing him to shout in pain. He seems fairly oblivious to Alice's presence, even if she tries to use any of her weapons on him.
- Humpty Dumpty was portrayed by W. C. Fields in the 1933 Paramount film version of "Alice in Wonderland."
- In the 1998 version of "Through the Looking Glass", Humpty was played by Desmond Barrit.
