Mad Tea Party is a famous attraction at at Disneyland Park at Disneyland Resort in California and at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. There are also differently-named renditions of the ride at Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland. In Tokyo Disneyland, the ride is called Alice's Tea Party, in Paris, it is known as Mad Hatter's Tea Cups and in Hong Kong, the attraction goes by Mad Hatter Tea Cups. All 5 versions are in the Fantasyland sections of the parks that they are in. All versions of the Mad Tea Party attraction (excluding Tokyo) were opening day attractions, meaning that they were there for the opening day of the park. Though the ride is loved and iconic, it has infamous records of motion sickness.
Mad Tea Party is an attraction based on the Mad Tea Party from Disney's 1951 animated film, Alice in Wonderland. The film, including its Mad Tea Party scene is entirely based on the original Alice's Adventures in Wonderland book by Louis Carol. Mad Tea Party is one of the two Disney attractions based on Alice in Wonderland, the other is titularly called Alice in Wonderland.
The attraction features a circle-shaped spinning floor with a set of large tea cup-shaped structures placed upon it. Each tea cup acts as a vehicle which the customer(s) will sit inside of. All tea cups have a circular a seating bench inside of it and in the middle, a disc that the customers can grab and spin. As the customer spins the disc, their tea cup spins and turns. If they turn the disc in the other direction, the vehicle will begin to spin in the other direction. While the floor underneath all of the tea cups is in motion and spins, the disc-turning adds an additional spin to the individual tea cup.
