First appearance The Hunting of the Snark

The Bellman is a character in Lewis Carroll's poem, The Hunting of the Snark. The poem itself borrows some words and creatures from "Jabberwocky", another poem Lewis Carroll wrote for his book Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There. The Hunting of the Snark itself is a stand-alone work.

The poem speaks about the adventures of a crew that consists of 9 members. The Bellman is their leader, and he has the map of the Ocean (which in reality is a blank sheet of paper), which leads them to a strange land. The Bellman's contradictory navigational orders is one of the nonsensical elements in the poem. The Bellman also has a rule of three which is: What I tell you three times is true.
